A big win for Sony, the Associated Press over the next 18 months will be transitioning from their current cameras to Sony Alpha across the board. The cameras will be utilized for both photo and video. According to AP, they send some

3,000 photos and 200 videos a day to customers worldwide,

making their cameras an integral part of their daily workflow. Beyond being able to share lenses and memory cards (something which undoubtedly was also true if they used all Canon or Nikon cameras), the AP hopes that by utilizing Alpha cameras for both photos and videos, they’ll have better consistency between the two mediums.

While a win for Sony, the switch to Alpha cameras at the AP is more symbolic than a massive financial gain. With the AP transitioning over the next two years to Alpha cameras and not purchasing millions and millions of dollars worth gear, due to their size, it means that the deal is unlikely to have a dramatic impact on Sony’s bottom line. However, by having such a known and visible entity in the photography world switch exclusively to Alpha cameras indicates that Sony’s efforts at courting professionals away from Canon and Nikon is working.

Over the past several years, Sony has done a lot to improve the support and service offered to Alpha customers, as well as release lenses

and accessories

that cater to niche users. While none of them on their own are blockbusters products that will sell in large quantities, they signaled to professionals that Sony understands their needs and is more than willing to create gear that caters exclusively to them. The AP switching over to Alpha is proof of that.
