Right out of the gate, Astro Bot Rescue Mission provided a memorable PSVR game that was fun and visually appeasing while educational on all the features of PlayStation VR and the new virtual reality medium. And that was really the goal of Astro Bot — a fun way for Sony to teach PSVR owners how to utilize the new platform best. Astro Bot Rescue Mission was offered for free to ensure the maximum number of gamers played it and didn’t skip the more generic tutorials you’ll find at the beginning of some games.

Sony is hoping to do that again on PS5 with Astro’s Playroom, a game that will come pre-installed on each PlayStation 5. Hermen Hulst, Head of Worldwide Studios, on PS Blog:

Astro and his crew lead you on a magical introduction through PS5 in this fun platformer that comes pre-loaded on PS5. Explore four worlds, each based on PS5’s console components. Each area showcases innovative gameplay that taps into the new features of the PS5’s DualSense wireless controller.

Like Astro Bot Rescue Mission, which aimed to educate you on PSVR, Astro’s Playroom likely has a similar goal — to teach you all the new functionalities of PS5 and its new controller, DualSense, which has a host of new features, starting with Haptic feedback, and how it works.

It’s a smart move by Sony because more then ever, PS5 isn’t going to be about huge leaps and bounds of graphical differences, but more nuanced things like immediate boot times into games, new ways to share, and an all-new controller. What better way to do it than through a game that’s family-friendly and adorable? Because let’s be honest, not everybody out there reads SRN. Shocking, I know.
