Despite some naysaying, PlayStation VR is proving to be the little headset that could, having just crossed the 1 million units sold mark. A key reason for its early success has been bringing onboard varies developers with some lit AF games (see, I can be hip like the game’s title too).

In just the past few months, PSVR has enjoyed games like

  • Resident Evil: Biohazard
  • Farpoint
  • Star Trek: Bridge Crew

which were all built entirely with VR in mind. Adding to that roster is now a classic game reborn, DOOM, or in this case, DOOM VFR.

This DOOM adventure will bathe you in virtual carnage. Developed by id Software, the studio that pioneered the first-person shooter genre and modern VR, DOOM VFR brings the fast-paced, brutal gameplay fans of the series love to virtual reality. Immerse yourself in the UAC facility on Mars and the depths of Hell, as your skills are put to the test through intense combat and challenging puzzle-solving. Play as a cybernetic survivor who is activated by the UAC to fight the demon invasion, maintain order, and prevent catastrophic failure at the Mars facility. Lay waste to an army of demonic foes as you explore and interact with the outlandish world of DOOM from an entirely new perspective.

Story:

Set shortly after the demonic invasion on the UAC’s Martian research facility, you are the last known human survivor — until your death. Under a top-secret UAC operational contingency protocol, your consciousness is transferred to an artificial brain matrix. Your designated purpose: restore operational stability and use any means necessary to stop the onslaught of demons.

Key Features:

  • Experience DOOM combat and its iconic weapons and demons from an entirely new perspective
  • Physically interact with the DOOM universe as you seamlessly traverse across the UAC facility and Hell using teleportation and jet-strafe movement
  • Explore all-new UAC Martian research facility areas and discover the unique abilities of a cybernetic UAC security operative

In order for PlayStation VR to expand beyond a niche product, high profile games from established franchises work as a great conduit for exciting core fanbases that are eager to experience more who are then more than happy to serve as evangelists for the game at the new gaming medium. With that serving as a hook, Sony can then look to expand original IP on VR which is always a greater risk.

DOOM VFR is slated to launch on PlayStation VR later this year with PS4 Pro support.
