Hulu VR ends support for PlayStation VR

And other VR platforms

Conceptually, Hulu VR was a neat idea. Put on your headset, launch the app, and enter various locations ranging from a penthouse with a massive TV to a movie theater and enjoy the shows you’d typically watch in entirely new surroundings.

But as Scott Hayden writes for Road To VR, the app is being sunsetted.

Hulu’s dedicated VR app will no longer be supported on a number of headsets starting tomorrow, June 17th, the company says.

According to its list of supported devices, the premium video streaming service will quietly be discontinuing its VR apps

As of today, the Hulu VR app will no longer be available on:

  • PSVR
  • Oculus Go
  • Microsoft Windows Mixed Reality

This comes only a few months after Hulu axed its VR app on Google’s Daydream VR platform, which has since been discontinued in whole by Google itself.

Strangely enough, Hulu isn’t killing the app entirely, and it will continue to be available on:

  • Oculus Rift
  • Samsung Gear VR

While the Rift has been one of the more popular VR headsets, the fact that it will stick around on the poor-selling, poor performing, and long discontinued Samsung Gear VR is a head-scratcher. If I had to guess, I’d say it could be contractual, with Samsung having paid into its development that required Hulu to keep support for a certain period.

That doubly makes sense when Hulu VR is being pulled from PlayStation VR, which has to date sold over 5 million units, making it one of the better selling VR headsets. I wouldn’t be surprised that despite its higher sales count, PSVR owners never really used the app all that much, and pulling the plug meant one less thing for engineers at Hulu to worry about.

If you’re a VR owner, I’m curious to know if you ever use your headset to watch content or if it’s purely for gaming.
