Hardcore fans aside, it’s quite likely that the majority of gamers going into Kingdom Hearts 3 next year have only played the first and second entry which arrived over a decade ago. Confusing storylines aside, the elapsed time between the series is a good enough reason for many of the plot points and characters to be forgotten but did you know that Kingdom Hearts 3 will actually be the 13th entry in the series?

That’s right: between the first two proper entries, Square Enix has released a dizzying number of smaller stories, remixes, and final entries that have built on the lore established by the first two games. To make matters worse, the games were released across various platforms, requiring gamers to have access to countless hardware if they wanted to keep up with the entire saga.

With Kingdom Hearts: The Story So Far, all that changes as Square Enix brings:

KINGDOM HEARTS HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX

  • KINGDOM HEARTS FINAL MIX
  • KINGDOM HEARTS Re:Chain of Memories
  • KINGDOM HEARTS 358/2 Days (HD Remastered cinematics)
  • KINGDOM HEARTS II FINAL MIX
  • KINGDOM HEARTS Birth by Sleep Final MIX
  • KINGDOM HEARTS Re:coded (HD Remastered cinematics)

KINGDOM HEARTS HD 2.8 FINAL CHAPTER PROLOGUE

  • KINGDOM HEARTS Dream Drop Distance HD
  • KINGDOM HEARTS 0.2 Birth by Sleep –A fragmentary passage–
  • KINGDOM HEARTS χ Back Cover (movie)

to the PS4 in a massive collection that includes a feature film¹ and HD graphics among other improvements. But in Square fashion, the above list is how the games will be delivered and also happen to be out of order with no insight on when gamers should approach each title.

So yes, in the end, you’ll still have to rely on the internet to try to make sense of Kingdom Hearts but hey, at least it’s all available on one disk (or digital download!). Kingdom Hearts: The Story So Far will arrive on October 30th for $40 (with pre-orders already live on Amazon) and is so far exclusive to PS4 and North America.

¹ No real details on this, because why would Square give details about the film included that’s launching at month’s end?
