No PSVR successor in the near future

Because Sony’s not ready to talk about it yet

--

If you were hoping for a successor to PlayStation VR, it looks like you’ll have to wait a bit longer. When speaking to JagatPlay, the always pleasant Shu had this to say:

We are not planning to make any changes.

The platform that we have — PlayStation game console — what we support is to provide the same technology to as many people as possible so that we can provide the really high-tech system at the very affordable price, because we make lots of them. And also at the same time create a large enough install base of the same system for the developers to aim their game development.

So it’s very important for us to make sure that once we introduce a system, it’s a really high quality system and we can make sure that the people, when they purchase, can count on using it for many years to come. And for people to know that the games will be released for many years to come.

PlayStation VR has been on sale for less than a year and most recently crossed the 1 million marker. Clearly Sony has been able to capture consumer attention and that was obvious during the PlayStation E3 2017 press conference when the middle chunk of the keynote was dedicated to tons of new PSVR titles. This undoubtedly means that unless something dramatic takes place, we’ll see a successor to PSVR, making it a matter of when and not if.

As Shu clearly points out, they have no plans to ‘talk about a PSVR successor’ and not there isn’t a successor. Could those plans be to talk about it at TGS or PlayStation Experience? Perhaps, though with PS4 Pro still a relatively new product for them, I’d wager that we see a PSVR 2 or whatever it will be called in mid to late 2018, at the earliest. I just hope it doesn’t slip until 2019 because there are some minor, but key features PSVR could use that could be achieved even with a mid-cycle and fairly silent upgrade, but I’ll leave that for another piece.

Any new PSVR games announced at E3 catch your attention?
