The jury is out on the future of VR and if it will ever truly catch on with consumers, but Sony’s taking that challenge in strides and attempting to write their own future. According to the latest numbers, PSVR has just crossed the 2 million units sold number, up from 1 million units in June.

If that’s not impressive enough, PSVR sales accounted for nearly 50% of 1 million VR units sold in Q3 2017. Oculus Rift and HTC Vive came in at 21% and 16% respectively. The only other VR headsets to sell better than PlayStation VR are the Google Daydream or Samsung Gear VR, though the caliber of VR they deliver is far below that of PSVR. On top of that, both headsets are given away for nearly free, if not free with every occasion possible where PSVR is seeked out and purchased by consumers.

To further boost their VR initiative, Sony has rolled out a program that allows PlayStation Plus members to try PSVR for free at home. It was also revealed in November that PSVR has been responsible for $500 million to Sony’s bottom line, a nice revenue bump from a product that’s still niche.

Going forward, the big question that remains is whether we’ll see a successor to PSVR prior to the arrival of PS5 or if its fate is tied to the next gen PlayStation which is likely slated for 2019 or 2020 arrival.
