Streaming TV is something that just about every tech or media company has been dipping their toes in with hopes of attracting the unicorn that is millennials who’ve grown detached from cable. With a taste for streaming services that could be used on just about every device, we’ve seen the likes of PlayStation, YouTube, and Hulu (which is now owned by Disney) give streaming TV a shot with mostly mixed results.

At last count, PS Vue hit the 670,000 subscriber marker way back in December of 2017

and the live TV streaming service has now officially hit 800,000 subscribers. While an added 130K users in a 1.5 year time span isn’t great, it does show that the service is at least growing and that’s impressive when you consider that YouTube TV, a similar service, only has 1 million subscribers. In comparison, PS Vue hasn’t enjoyed the same marketing might that Google has thrown behind YouTube TV, nor does PlayStation have a destination like YouTube which bombards viewers with ads to sign up for the service.

As it stands, subscriber counts for various TV streaming services according to Cord Cutters News are:

  • Sling TV 2.4 Million
  • Hulu with Live TV 2 Million
  • DIRECTV NOW 1.5 Million
  • YouTube TV 1 Million
  • PlayStation Vue 800K
  • fuboTV 300K

For their part, PlayStation has been working hard to make sure PS Vue is available on as many devices as possible

and is embracing new and easy ways to sign up and use the service.

At the same time, from anyone who’s used the service, though anecdotal, I’ve heard nothing but praise from video quality to UI, indicating to me that PlayStation has something great on their hands. It just might take more time and money to get the service to a place that’s prominent and profitable. Hopefully Sony has the patience and finances to fund PS Vue until then as broadcasting rights continually shift and get more expensive.
