PlayStation has begun to send out beta invites for PS4 system update 7.0 which promises to bring a handful of changes. The biggest feature change revolves around party sizes which is being bumped up to 16 players from the current 8. As somebody who raids in Destiny 2 and Final Fantasy XIV, I’m not sure how much of a demand there is for such a party size as most games don’t accommodate groups that large anyways, but if you’ve got a healthy group of PSN friends who like to play various games while still chatting, this is a welcome change.

With the increased party size also comes better voice quality in those chats. PlayStation doesn’t really get into detail about what exactly is changing, but it likely has to do with the audio codec they’ve implemented on the console as well as some back-end server side tweaks.

To wrap things up, updating your PS4 in certain situations is about to get easier as well. We’ve all been there, doing minor updates, like

which requires you to do the install and then reboot your PS4. Post system update 7.0,

performance for system updates is also being improved, meaning your PS4 won’t always need to restart after every update. Going forwards, select system software updates will automatically be installed after download if the [System Software Update Files] setting is switched on.

This alone makes the new firmware update completely worth it. With beta invites just beginning to go out, it’s unclear when exactly PS4 system update 7.0 will go live for everyone, but fall is the most likely timeframe.

Are there other features you’d like to see come to PS4?
