Purple Sony Xperia 5 II announced

Will be exclusive to Japan

There are a lot of things you can fault Sony’s mobile ambitions with, but one of them isn’t a lack of colors. From pink to black, green, blue, and purple, the Xperia lineup often offers a wide color range that exudes the brand’s premium esthetics. Unfortunately for many Xperia fans, these colors are impossible to come back. That’s because so often, colors are broken down by territory and even carriers.

Case in point, Xperia 5 II is offered in pink, grey, blue, and black in most of Asia, but pink is nowhere to be found in Europe. The same is now true with Purple, a color offered exclusively on NTT docomo in Japan.

This trend is hardly unique to colors — Sony often makes exclusive variants of Xperia phones as well, something I’ve argued against.

The color is no different unless the carrier is willing to foot the entire bill for whatever extra it costs Sony to create a small batch just for them. Even if the numbers align on a spreadsheet, I still dislike the idea that Xperia owners won’t have equal access to the colors mainly because of how beautiful they tend to be.

What do you think — should Sony offer exclusive colors in various countries, or do you also dislike the idea?
