Sony Reconsidered

While the PS Vita launched with a healthy of important apps which include Twitter, Facebook, Foursquare, and Flickr, the no brainer Skype was no where to be heard. Unlike the PSP which requires the purchase of a front facing camera which already has Skype, the PS Vita features a front and rear facing camera, right out of the box. So it seemed strange that the predecessor handheld would have access to such an app while the new and much more powerful Vita would not. Now, word has it that a Skype app could be headed to the PlayStation Vita by months end.

Thanks to a slip or casual acknowledgement on Sony’s EU PlayStation Blog, when a user asked about the availability for Skype on the PS Vita, Jawad Ashraf, a Sony rep replied,

“Looking at the tail end of the month at the moment.”

Sony’s mobile devices like their Xperia line of Android phones and tablets can already chat with the millions of Skype users while Sony’s 2011 and beyond line of televisions can also be connected to Skype, after the purchase of a compatible camera and download of the free app. If the PS Vita and PlayStation 3 can also join the ecosystem, PSN users will have a new compelling way to chat with one and other, making the Vita a true PS3 portable.

Would you like to see Skype come to the PS Vita and PS3?
