Sony and Canon reign supreme in Japan

Nikon is a distant third

It’s been years since Sony took the crown as the king of mirrorless cameras in Japan and dethroned Canon for the number one spot, a trend that continues to this date. Unable to compete with the volume and variety of cameras in the market, Nikon has slipped into a distant third with Sigma and Panasonic fighting for scraps.

As reported by SonyAlphaRumors, while still king of the hill, recent cameras like the EOS-R5 and R6 have helped Canon gain ground on Sony, and if the trajectory continues, perhaps even surpass them. Now, it’s worth noting that Sony has had a hard time producing enough of the well-received a7S III to meet demand, which competes directly with the R5 and has yet to ship the more budget-friendly a7C.

There are even rumors of an a7 IV on the horizon, though realistically, I wouldn’t expect that camera till Spring 2021. That said, while full-frame mirrorless Canon sales could occasionally eclipse that of Sony, the company still has a long way to go before they can match total Alpha sales. As the above chart shows, while the sales gap may have been more tight in the past few months, it hardly makes up for the head start Sony has enjoyed.
