You have to hand it to Sony Mobile — while there’s been little news from Samsung, the largest Android OEM, about when their flagship Galaxy series will receive Android 9 Pie, a new blog post from Sony has outlined when and which Xperia phones will receive the latest OS from Google.

Release for Android Pie will work in two phases with the first wave of phones expected to receive Android 9 in November 2018. Those phones include:

  • Xperia XZ2
  • XZ2 Premium
  • XZ2 Compact
  • Xperia XZ Premium
  • Xperia XZ1
  • Xperia XZ1 Compact

With that wave complete, some time in early 2019, the second phase will begin, which includes the:

  • Xperia XA2
  • Xperia XA2 Ultra
  • Xperia XA2 Plus

Unfortunately, everybody else, like XA2 Compact owners, are out of luck and will be left behind on Android 8 with no upgrade path. When it comes to device and time availability for Android OS updates, nothing sums it up better than this clip from Spaceballs.

To explain how the entire process works, Sony has put together a cheeky infographic to explain what it takes to release a new build of Android but I somehow doubt that will make it any better for everybody not receiving Android Pie.
