Following up on their promise to release new phones in 2018 with a fresh design, a leaked image points us to what could likely be the flagship Xperia XZ2 which features a bezel free design, minus the camera slot at the top.

As always, take such leaks with a grain of salt, but Mihai Matei writes for Android Headlines:

Aside from the top bezel which is a little bit thicker in order to accommodate a loudspeaker, front-facing camera, and a sensor array, the device presents very thin bottom and side bezels, leaving no room for front-facing physical buttons or a fingerprint scanner, the latter of which appears to have been embedded into an indentation on the right edge. The same edge also seems to accommodate a volume rocker and what could be a dedicated camera shutter button judging by its lower placement.

Over the past few months, we’ve seen several specs for upcoming Xperia phones and it’s likely a safe bet to assume the Xperia XZ2 will offer:

  • 5.5-inch Display (HD)
  • Snapdragon 845 processor
  • 4GB RAM
  • 64GB on board memory (expandable to 256GB)
  • 13-megapixel front-facing camera (selfie)
Shot on iPhone X

From there, it’s unclear what type of camera system we’ll see for the front but a two sensor camera like iPhone X is quite possible. If true, don’t be surprised to see most of these specs also pop on what would potentially be the Xperia XZ2 Premium which would feature a 4K HDR display.

In order for this to compete with flagship phones, hopefully we’ll continue to see a water-resistant design, wireless charging, and perhaps most importantly, the ability for the camera to shoot portrait photos. That last one has been a game changer for me and if Sony can nail it, they’ll be in for a treat.

Though CES 2018 is right around the corner, I wouldn’t expect to see this phone until MWC 2018 (on February 26th), with a launch date of late spring or early summer. Let me know which features you’d like to see in the Xperia XZ2.

Thanks to Julius for sending this my way!
